Piazza Castello, 74123 Taranto TA
Piazza Castello is the beating heart of the ancient Taranto, as well as a crucial hub for the activities of the city.
The Town Hall, the Columns of the Doric Temple and the ground entrance to the Aragonese Castle face towards the square, which is now very airy, due to the many urban reorganization works of the area that consisted on demolishing several buildings.
From the square, next to the columns, you enter Via Duomo, an ancient road probably already present in Greek times and today one of the main arteries of the Old City of Taranto.
The Palazzo di Città, built between 1864 and 1869 and today the seat of the Municipality of Taranto, stands on an area that, probably in the sixteenth century, was occupied by the so-called “Captain’s House”, perhaps a fortified building that housed the military governor of the city.
